Hello, sna ke ! (Hello to Sluggo too)
The side yard probably isn’t the best place to hang out in my yard. I moved him to the back fence so he could make his way to the 20 acre lot behind us.
He really didn’t like being transported by shovel. We argued about it for a while, him trying to bite the shovel, my son and I doing our best to get him on the shovel without hurting him. I finally won the argument and got him where I wanted him.
Let’s hope he finds plenty of insects and small field mice in his new territory.

I don’t get a lot of snakes in my area, what type is it?

What kinda snake is that? This one gave us quite a start on a recent ride.
No, I was not inclined to get closer for a better picture.

I’m not well versed on herps, so I don’t know for sure. It looks like a juvenile corn snake to me. Whether it is or not, I wasn’t interested in trying to handle it.

I’ll help everyone out:

King snake, maybe? What kind of snake is that?

I’m not real interested in reptiles, so I’m not really sure what it was. It looks like a juvenile corn snake, but then again, what do I know?

Rattle snake.

Just before this, w
e rode by a rattlesnake
in a bush. W
e never saw it but the loud
rattle was unmistakeable!
So seeing this in front of us
brought us to a startled stop. But it never
rattled and had
a
narrow head so bull snake.

Sure that one isn’t a Bull Snake? They grow up to 8-feet long, look kind of like a rattler, and have the banded tail that turns into spots further up.

Still looks absolutely massive. I’d nope out real fast.

Rattle snake was earlier in the ride. This one was bull snake.

It was big. We were sure it was a bull snake but we still
weren’t going to get any closer to confirm.

Aren't they still fairly mean, despite being non-venomous?

I can only see the body, rattle snakes most def have rattles.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell what the tip of the snake has. Especially from a distance. I assumed
it didn’t have a rattle figuring it would’ve rattled if it had one
as it
grudgingly moved off the trail. I wasn’t willing to get close enough to confirm given the consequences of being wrong.

oh. I don’t know much about snakes either. I know
enough to stay away from rattlesnakes and that bull snakes look like rattlers but aren’t. I’m learning what to be careful of in CO since moving from WI. i.e.
be afraid of moose.

periculum funem is the Latin name for it

Are you messing with me? Pantherophis guttatus is the name for the corn snake. Google said so. Google also has no idea what “periculum funem” means.
